Cancer Rehabilitation

What is Cancer Rehabilitation?

Cancer and its treatment can cause debilitating side effects for patients. A person’s ability to function and his/her quality of life can be compromised.  Research has demonstrated positive findings between the relationship of exercise/rehabilitation and the quality of life in patients with cancer. Physical, occupational and speech therapies can help to enhance functional recovery, reduce fatigue and risk of complications.

Individuals undergoing cancer treatment may experience one or more of the following:

  • Pain
  • Muscle imbalance
  • Fatigue
  • Difficulty walking
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Lymphedema or fluid retention
  • Osteoporosis
  • Scar tissue formation
  • Changes in sensation
  • Attention, thinking, or memory problems
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Changes in voice

Together with the physician, the therapy team can work with patients to maximize their abilities for the most effective recovery. Your therapist can provide an individualized assessment and treatment for the following:

  • Pain management
  • Weakness due to disease or treatment
  • Limitations in range of motion
  • Decreased endurance/fatigue
  • Balance impairments
  • Diminished cardiovascular health
  • Scar tissue management
  • Swelling/edema
  • Peripheral Neuropathy
  • Limitations with activities of daily living
  • "Chemo Brain"- limitations with attention, memory, problem solving
  • Speech/swallowing

Importance of Therapy During Cancer Treatment

Maintaining some level of activity during or after cancer treatment helps to reduce the risk of complications and can lead to an enhanced quality of life. Exercise can boost the body’s tolerance to chemotherapy and radiation. Including exercise in a treatment plan with cancer patients has shown to improve patients functional work capacity, muscular endurance and strength, range of motion, pulmonary function, balance and gait.  Performing a daily regime of exercise can allow for a sense of control over your condition which in turn can lead to less anxiety and stress.
